Do I really need protein and creatine, or is one enough?

They do different jobs and they compound. Creatine may support strength and power output, which is what lets you add reps and load over time. Protein supplies the amino acids your body uses to repair and rebuild after that work. Neither one does much on its own.

Will creatine make me hold water or feel bloated?

Creatine monohydrate draws water directly into the muscle cells rather than beneath the skin, promoting muscle fullness and cellular hydration rather than abdominal bloating. Any small movement on the scale in the first week or two is water inside the muscle, which is where you want it.

Does creatine need a loading phase?

The label recommends 10 g pre and post workout for the first week to saturate your muscles faster, then 5 g a day after that. You can skip loading and just take 5 g daily, it simply takes longer to get to the same place.
